Install a heat pump

Heat pump installation starts with Manual J load calculation, duct condition, insulation, climate zone, electrical capacity, existing furnace or AC, thermostat wiring, backup heat and comfort goals. The right system is sized for the home, not copied from the old equipment nameplate.

Good HVAC contractors check airflow, ducts, returns, refrigerant line routes, panel capacity and cold-climate performance. Oversizing can cause short cycling; undersizing can overuse auxiliary heat.

HVAC heat pump replacement may include outdoor unit, air handler, line set, duct repairs, electrical disconnect, thermostat, condensate, backup heat strips, permits and commissioning. Ductless mini-splits and geothermal systems are different scopes.

Estimates should separate equipment, labor, ductwork, electrical, permits, disposal, thermostat, warranty and maintenance plan. SEER2, HSPF2 and cold-climate rating should be easy to find.

Ducted heat pump systems often run about USD 8,000 to USD 18,000 installed, ductless mini-splits commonly range from USD 4,000 to USD 12,000 depending on zones, and geothermal can reach USD 25,000 to USD 50,000 or more.

Costs rise with duct repair, panel upgrades, zoning, difficult access, cold-climate equipment and permits. Compare installed performance, warranty and utility rebates rather than tonnage alone.

The process runs from load calculation and estimate to permits, equipment order, removal, installation, electrical connection, refrigerant charging, airflow balancing, thermostat setup and final walkthrough. Many replacements take one to three days.

Commissioning matters. The contractor should measure static pressure, refrigerant charge, temperature split and airflow so the system works beyond just turning on.

Variable-speed compressors, cold-climate models, smart thermostats, filter cabinets, duct sealing and backup heat strategy all affect comfort. Brand matters less than design and installation quality.

In colder regions, low-temperature capacity and defrost behavior are critical. In humid climates, dehumidification and airflow setup matter just as much.

Before installation, clear equipment areas, attic or crawl access, panel access and outdoor pad space. Temporary loss of heating or cooling should be planned by season.

Electrical or duct upgrades can extend the schedule. If the project is tied to rebates, verify reservation steps before equipment is installed.

Common mistakes are rule-of-thumb sizing, ignored duct leaks, skipped permits, weak electrical planning and relying on old federal credit assumptions. Incentives changed after 2025, so current state and utility programs matter.

Use rebates, checklists and the customer guide to compare estimates by design. Ask how the system will perform at your local design temperature and what happens if rooms stay uneven.
