Install a heat pump

A heat pump installation depends on heat loss, radiator sizes, flow temperature, hot water demand, insulation, outdoor unit position, noise, pipework and electrical capacity. The installer should design the system around the home, not just swap a boiler for a box outside.

In UK homes, the key questions are heat loss calculation, MCS design, microbore pipework, hot water cylinder space and whether radiators need upgrading. A well-sized system can run steadily at lower temperatures and avoid expensive immersion heater use.

An air source heat pump retrofit may include the outdoor unit, cylinder, controls, larger radiators, pipework changes, electrical work, condensate drainage, boiler removal and commissioning. Ground source heat pumps add ground loops or boreholes and much higher enabling work.

Before work starts, clear access to the old boiler, cylinder location, consumer unit and outdoor unit area. Plan hot water downtime and heating downtime, especially in winter.

Lead times vary with installer workload and grant processing. If insulation, radiators or a consumer unit upgrade are needed, sequence them before final commissioning.

Common mistakes are no heat loss calculation, poor radiator sizing, outdoor units in bad airflow, ignoring microbore pipework and assuming running costs without tariff context. Planning rules are easier than many people expect, but location and noise still matter.
